VARICOSE VEINS STUDY (ONE LEG)

Available for patients over 18 years old.

What is this scan for?

Varicose veins are deep purple or blue swollen veins that you can see and often feel lying under your skin in your legs. They develop when blood doesn’t flow properly through the superficial veins. They often run in families and there may be a hereditary component. Women are more likely to suffer from varicose veins due to hormonal factors including puberty, pregnancy, menopause, the use of birth control pills, and HRT.

The most common symptoms of varicose veins are aching, discomfort and heaviness of the legs, which are usually worse at the end of the day. Sometimes the ankle can swell, too. These symptoms are not medically serious, but can be treated if they become painful or causing discomfort.

What does this scan show?

It shows if there are visual abnormalities to fully assess the leg veins to find the cause of varicose veins.

The Ultrasound Scan Procedure

Venous ultrasound uses sound waves to produce pictures of the body’s veins. Ultrasound does not use ionizing radiation and has no known harmful effects. During the ultrasound scan the sonographer will place a warm water-based gel on the area to be examined, and will then press firmly on the skin with an ultrasound probe, moving it around until they have obtained the desired images. The ultrasound scan has no known risks and is usually pain free. When the scan is completed the gel can be wiped off easily using tissue.
