FOLLICLE TRACKING SCAN

What is this scan for?

This type of scan is needed for clinical assessment during Fertility or IVF Programs because the optimal time for ovulation (either natural or assisted) is needed for the best chances pregnancy.

A follicle is the technical term used to describe a small cyst in the ovary that contains an egg. Primarily, follicle tracking ultrasound scans identify and measure the presence and growth of follicles in the ovaries from the first day of period until ovulation occurs. In a typical 30 days ovulation cycle, the egg is released from the ovary between day 12 to 16 of the cycle.

What does this scan show?

This scan will:

  • measure the volume and size of the follicles
  • measure the thickness of the womb lining
  • assess the condition of the womb (endometrium)
  • count the ovaries volume
  • check for abnormal signs

The Ultrasound Scan Procedure

Preparation: You will need a full bladder.

Ultrasound is safe, non-invasive and does not use ionizing radiation. During the ultrasound scan the sonographer will place a warm water-based gel on the area to be examined, and will then press firmly on the skin with an ultrasound probe, moving it around until they have obtained the desired images. The ultrasound scan has no known risks and is usually pain free. When the scan is completed the gel can be wiped off easily using tissue.

Please note for this scan there may be a trans-vaginal probe that is pain-free and your Sonographer will explain and put you at ease.
